When to review your workplace pension — and what to look for

Calculator and financial paperwork on a desk

Most people only glance at their workplace pension when they change jobs. That leaves contribution rates, fund choices and beneficiary details untouched for years — often through pay rises and family changes that should have prompted a review.

Start with the contribution percentage. If your employer matches above the automatic enrolment minimum, check you are capturing the full match. Then look at the default fund: it may still suit you, but life-stage funds shift risk as you age, and some savers prefer a simpler mix once they understand the labels.

Finally, confirm your expression of wish form names the right people. Divorce, remarriage and new children are common reasons this document falls out of date. Bring the latest statement to a planning meeting if you want a second pair of eyes on charges and consolidation options across old pots.
